My thoughts on Cloud Native Strategies for Mauritian Businesses during Developers Conference 2024

18 July 2024 By Avinash Meetoo Leave a Comment

On 18 July 2024, I was on a panel on “Cloud Native Strategies for Mauritian Businesses” during Developers Conference 2024 organised by the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community at the Caudan Arts Centre.

My other panel members were Dawid van der Merwe, Solutions Architect at SUSE, Viv Padayatchy, Managing Director of Cybernaptics, Delphine Bissessur, Head of Digital at a Mauritian bank, Dhaneshwar Damry, Founder & CEO of Bhumishq and the panel was moderated by Ish Sookun, one of the co-organisers, together with Jochen Kirstätter, of Developers Conference 2024.

I spoke about the most significant technological advancements that Mauritius needs to focus on in the next five years to stay competitive. While I am in favour of always pursuing the latest trends, I also understand, given my experience in policy-making, that the fundamentals need to be right for a country to prosper. There are key areas where the education system in Mauritius needs to evolve to better prepare students for the demands of the IT industry. And, as a whole, the population needs to become more innovative. This is not only a question of policy.

I also shared some thoughts about whether Mauritius has the potential to position itself as a major cloud-native expert and solutions provider to African companies in the coming years. I think Mauritius has an important role to play but we will have to better understand the African countries, their people and the problems that need to be solved.

The Rise of the Dopamine Culture

19 February 2024 By Avinash Meetoo Leave a Comment

Here is a very interesting article on the rise of the dopamine culture in the world.

The author argues that everything is being replaced by mindless and endless scrolling and the effects might prove to be very detrimental for kids and also for adults, at home, at school and at work.

He also argues that people should start raising their voices against the likes of TikTok, Facebook and Instagram (Meta), etc. (and also YouTube (Google)) before it is too late.

My opinion

I’ve always been an adept of long form writing (e.g. this blog and my family blog but also my journal and my Obsidian second brain). I also love having long conversations and debates (ask my friends and family members!).

Therefore, you can easily guess that I am pissed these days by the lack of long interactions. Most just say hello and go back to their phones. Few wants to speak. Few have original thoughts that they want to share with others.

I know teachers are finding it incredibly hard to work with kids today because of their lack of attention span. I also know that businesses are having major issues dealing with their new recruits for similar reasons.

I think that the author is right to say that the only solution is to do a detox from time to time. People need to stop using TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc. to watch endless clips, say, during a whole week and this will give their brains time to reset a bit. He writes:

“Unplug yourself from time to time, and start noticing the trees or your goofy pets. They actually look better in real life than in the headset.”

I agree.

What do you think?

Being a Jury during the FinTech Youth Summit 2023

8 December 2023 By Avinash Meetoo Leave a Comment

On Friday 8 December 2023, I was a member of the jury during the FinTech Youth Summit 2023 organised by the Mauritius Africa FinTech Hub under the sponsorship of the Mauritius Commercial Bank. The three other jury members were Benazeer Saïdoo (Mauritius Africa FinTech Hub), Vishal Ramphul (MCB Group) and Kamal Burun (Financial Services Commission).

Nine teams of young people pitched interesting ideas for innovation in the FinTech industry in Mauritius. Pitches were on topics such as Banking for Digital Natives, Disruptive Banking for SMEs & Corporates and Internet of Things (IoT) & Banking. Some of the pitches were brillant and, in my opinion, if developed further, could be the foundation for successful businesses.

It was an interesting experience for me and I’m sure for the young presenters as well. I wish them the very best for the future.
